NumericalDataOriginal PPI data observed by the X-band radar (GIF format)

Description:
The two-dimensional plot of rain cloud distribution estimated from the X-band weather radar at Kototabang in West Sumatra, Indonesia (0.20S, 100.32E, 865m MSL), which has been operated since September 23, 2002. This plot shows a spatial distribution of reflective energy flux from rain clouds within a 30 km circular region at the center of radar location for each elevation angle. The unit of reflective energy flux is dBZ. File names are composed of (year)(month)(day).(hour)(minute)(second).gif. Local time (UT + 7h) is used for time data.
Acknowledgement: If you acquire X-band radar data, we ask that you acknowledge us in your use of the data. This may be done by including text such as X-band radar data provided by Shimane University and Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) of Kyoto University. We would also appreciate receiving a copy of the relevant publications.

Name: X-band weather radar at the Kototabang observatory
Description: The X-band weather radar at Kototabang in West Sumatra, Indonesia (0.20S, 100.32E, 865m MSL) is a pulsed Doppler radar to measure three-dimensional structure of rain field over a range of several tens of kilometers. A circular parabola antenna mounted on a shelter has the diameter and weight of 1.2 m and 250 kg, respectively. This antenna rotates with 2 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 16 elevation angles. It takes 8 minutes to make a volume scan. The XDR transmits a radio wave of 9.74 GHz with the peak power and pulse length of 40 kW and 0.5 micro sec, respectively, to the sky, and receives the scattered echoes back by atmosphere with a sampling range of 0.25-31.5 km (0.25 km interval). The major system parameters are summarized in the web page in Japanese (http://www.rish.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ear/x-radar/index.html).

Observatory:
Name: Equatorial Atmosphere observatory at Kototabang
Description: The Equatorial Atmosphere observatory at Kototabang is located at the equator in West Sumatra, Indonesia (0.20S, 100.32E, 865m MSL). In this site, various kinds of instruments (for example, boundary layer radar (BLR), equatorial atmosphere radar (EAR) and meteor wind (MW) radar) have been installed, which measure the equatorial atmosphere including the troposphere, lower stratosphere, upper mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere.
